Careers for merchandise and product development (FIDM)?

I will be starting FIDM (fashion institute of design and merchandising) in the fall. I love the industry, but skeptic at how many careers are really available coming from that major. Anyone graduated or successful in it? Thanks in advance.

Well I have a friend who graduated from FIDM's Merchandise Product Development program and she is a merchandiser and loves her job! She says that FIDM was a great choice for a fashion college and credits them for giving her the education to get so far.

Other jobs you can pursue after graduating from FIDM's Merchandise Product Development program are: Merchandiser, Trend Analyst, Product/Brand Manager, Sourcing Assistant, Assistant Designer, Fabric/Trim Buyer.

Should I major in Fashion Merchandising?

It's time to start looking at colleges and I kinda have an idea of what I want to do as a career. I definately want to work in the fashion industry. I want to work for a fashion magazine, possibly become an editor.
Also I want to do things like Lauren and Whitney do on the Hills, such as working behind the scenes at fashion shows, etc.
Is "Fashion Merchandising" what I should major in? Or "Fashion Marketing"?
Also, are there any classes you recommend I should take in high school for this? (Accounting, Business Law, etc.)
Help please! Thanks.

Spice Girls Live from Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2007

The Spice Girls are a BRIT Award-winning English pop girl group formed in 1994. They consist of Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm. According to the BBC, they are the best-selling girl group of all time.

They were signed to Virgin Records and released their debut single, “Wannabe”, in 1996. The song spent seven weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart, becoming number one in 31 countries and helped establish the group as an “global phenomenon”.[The Spice Girls have sold more than 55 million records worldwide with only three albums (the first two with Geri), landing them the title for fastest-selling girl group ever. The demand for their first two albums was unprecedented, making them the most successful British band since the Beatles. Their first album, Spice, sold more than 23 million copies worldwide, ranked #37 in the list of 100 Most Successful Albums in music history, become the best-selling album by a female group of the all time. Measures of their success include international record sales, a 2007/2008 reunion tour, merchandising, record breaking achievements such as “Wannabe” becoming the biggest single released by a female group and iconic symbolism such as the union jack dress, “Girl Power”, and their nicknames.

Under the guidance of their long time mentor and manager Simon Fuller, the group embraced merchandising and became a regular feature of the British press. Each member of the group was given an alias by Top of the Pops Magazine in 1996, which were adopted by the group and media alike. According to biographer David Sinclair, “Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh and Sporty were the most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George and Ringo.” In 1997, the Spice Girls released a movie called Spice World.

In May 1998, Geri Halliwell left the group in the middle of numerous rumours. The four remaining members released the third album, but went their separate ways in late 2000 to focus on their solo careers. On 28 June 2007 all five re-formed before the launch of their Reunion Tour in December, alongside the release of their Greatest Hits album. In December, a new official documentary Giving You Everything aired on various television networks around the globe, the documentary showed the group talking frank about their rise to fame and the current reunion. In February 2008, the Spice Girls announced that they were ending their tour prematurely in Toronto on 26 February 2008 (thus excluding countries which were originally planned, such as Australia).

career in fashion hopefully!?

I am a junior in high school, and an aspiring fashion designer. I am not completely sure if I want to be a "designer." but so far that sounds the best, I love to sew, I just don't know If I would be doing that much sewing. My future goal is to start out by opening a little boutique titled "Chimmer" a play on my last name and shimmer, and then hopefully go on to do bigger things in the industry. I was wondering if this is a suitable career for me. Is it difficult to get into the industry? Some colleges that I was thinking of attending are: Parson (NYC) and FIDM (LA). How difficult is it to be accepted into these schools. I am an average student, mostly As and Bs with a few Cs and maybe one D. I have taken fashion design 1 and 2 and fashion merchandising 1 and 2 already in high school. I was also in an FCCLA fashion design competition last year where I won a gold metal at state and am in the same competition this year. I am an editor of the school newspaper, in French club, and National Art Honors Society. I am currently taking 4 art classes and have already taken 2 others. Next year I am planning on taking AP Studio Art. My grade point average is 2.8/4.0. Is this enough to get me into those schools? Also, are there any other colleges that you would recommend, or any other job related to fashion?

it really depends, generally those colleges consider your GPA, but also look into your aspirations and your goals to accept you into their schools, but it seems like you got a decent shot (as long as your raise up that GPA! you can retake courses at your local community college to do so)

Becuase you like fashion, it doesn't have to be your main thing. you can major in Marketing, Economics, or even study Broadcast Journalism- all the things that are essential in selling your products, and have the fashion as a backup. Remember that passion and practical are two different things, and that you always want something to fall back on just in case your fashions dont begin, or stay the way you want them.

Overall, just work hard and you'll eventually get there- stay focused on school, and continue with your new designs!

Does a FASHION merchandise BUYER travel internationally?

It depends on who you are the buyer for. International travel can be a plus or a minus depending on your own desires. Most buyers have people come to them though on a daily basis.

If I want to work in the fashion industry?

Ok, so, I wanna be a model but I know that a great career in modeling isn’t guaranteed. Though I still plan on pursuing modeling, I wanna know what are some other careers to do in the fashion or entertainment industry. I’ve heard of something called fashion merchandising but I’m not sure on exactly what you do. If any one can help me (honestly) answer the question please. It would also be great to hear from people who actually are in these careers. So pls dont answer if you don’t know. Also if you can give me any helpful hints on modeling, answer as well. Thanks

Well, if you’re in the US, the magazine that I write for is having a model search if you would like to participate. No, this is not a fake. I will provide links with all of the information.

Furthermore, there is fashion merchandising, which is where people learn how to manufacture, buy, promote, and sell pretty much anything fashion related. Various careers can grow from this major- boutique owner, fashion designer (that is, if you also were a fashion designer major), personal buyer, etc.

Of course there is the editorial side of fashion, magazines, public relations, stylist, editor, art director, etc. There are so many opportunities, I suggest going to google to find out more.

What are some creative careers?

I am recently out of highschool and struggling to make up my mind about what to further study. I have taken several career tests and they all say I am an artistic and entersprising type. I'm looking for different creative career choices. Any thoughts on fashion marketing, merchandising? Media arts? Basically what are some creative career choices?

Peruse a university catalogue. Go to said university for one year, taking a bunch of different courses in the catalogue that appeal to you. Upon experiencing those courses, reconsider your direction in life.

Basically, if you don't know what you want in life, you still have time to think it over.

You could always just be a professional student. Get a BA (or a BSci, if you wanted to) and just continue with grad school, being a Teacher's Aide to pay the bills.

You could be a teacher. Teaching takes all kinds of folks.

You could go take a language and become a translator. That takes a lot of creativity because you basically have to re-write a lot of the thing you are translating. It's easier than being a writer, because you don't have to come up with the ideas yourself.

In that vein, you could be a writer or a journalist or even a photo journalist. Those require a creative entrepenuer.

well im only 16 and i want to know if fashion merchandising is great career or not do they have good business &where do they have more business in california & texas, i love fashion &thats why i want to do somthing w/fashion so do u think thats a good career & i want to win good money do gashion merchandisers make good money, or r there any other carees of fashion that are better if so which ones & why? i really need ure help because i need 2 know hwat i want do in my career so i want to go to college please help!!!!!

Women's fashions are a great field. Salaries are commensurate with abilities and track record.

You will start in floor sales, up to Buyer, then up to Merchandise Manager, (includes overseeing several departments, controlling budgets for each). With college and proper credentials, you may start as an Asst. Manager. Promotion is usually within.

This is a big question. Fashion is a high risk, fast turnover, fast changing business.

Having all the necessary knowledge in "book learning" will not guarantee success. It takes a special "feeling" of "what's next". Much of that can be learned by knowing your "customer's taste" always changing, and studying industry news.

There's an old axiom: "The right merchandise, at the right price, at the right time".
Markdowns can be disastrous in High Fashion

Anywhere is good. California is usually "first" in new fashions, and then it spreads Eastward.
