I was wondering if it is a good idea because I want to transfer to FIDM after i get my AA after 2 years at this school. Is this discouraged??

Most people I attend school with are Merchandising majors and Business Minors. It gives you a better understanding of what it takes to make it in the merchandising world.

I am a fashion Merchandising Major, and i don't own any top named brand clothing. I dress really cute and fashionable but I have never owned Abercrombie, Aeropostale, D&G,Hollister or American Eagle.

Is this odd coming form a major as mine?? (I buy whats AFFORDABLE but still)

I do wear Duck Head,Polo/Ralph Lauren, Levi, Guess,Zana Di, and I shop at Claires.

I don't think it's weird at all. There is no rule that says to be a fashion major of any kind you have to wear these name brands of clothing. It's not that those Named brands you listed are top name brands, just the most notable in that age demographic. After you graduate you are going to be in a whole new fish pond and trust me, its better to have a great creative, edgy fashion then a cookie cutter (no offense to those that wear them) If I wanted fashion advice on how to look like a teenager, I'd consult one that wore that type. If I wanted true advice, I'd ask someone that could blend together a great mix of classic, creative, vintage. Shows that they pay attention to whats in the fashion world, not the fashion mall. Look at an issue of Vogue or Elle or Harper's Bazaar. Are they featuring the new great looks from A&F, Aero, A&E, or Hollister…um no. Stay original, I think for one it will help you in the long run! Good luck on your degree!

Okay, well I know I'm really interested in Fashion Merchandising/Buying. The University I'm at currently doesn't offer a specific Fashion Merchandising major, but does offer Consumer Science and Merchandising major… BBBUT, I want to major in business (marketing) with a focus on retail (which my school suggests for people who want to do retail merchandising/buying)… then minor in Consumer Science and Merchandising and if I can, (I don't know if we can have 2 minors) also minor in Psychology. Does that sound like a good plan? Any suggestions? Maybe I should trying getting a job (next summer) at an apparel store?!

The answers and suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I think it is better to work in fashion store after you have some fashion/garment knowledge. lt can help you sale in store. then, you enter into store, you could hard to learn how to sale and how to ideal with different customers which you could not learn fm your university. Much experience make you victory

I think I'm pretty good at picking out outfits for people and putting new things together and I read a lot of fashion magazines and books. I've been watching Project Runway, though, and it seems like sometimes, I totally disagree with all the judges. I know it's art so people will have different preferences, but as a buyer who will buy for an entire customer base, it worries me when I disagree with established designers and established designers and magazine journalists.

I am trying to learn as much as possible about designers and trends from different decades but it's so overwhelming. I feel like I don't know anything! What kind of knowledge base is expected of me when I go to school? Anything in particular? Should I go in having a lot of knowledge about designers or fashion lingo or fashions of different decades and countries??

I'm freaking out

The basic knowledge that you need to know for this field id passion…..alot of people can't do this job,but if you have that spark,or that passion for the job,all the rest that you need to know is in school. No worries. When you go to school you'll learn why the judges said no to some of the things that the naked eye isn't trained for.Its the same thing with doctors. They can see stuff that looks fine to us,but its not. They didn't just wake up one morning, with basic knowledge of a doctor…..they knew they had an interest in the field and went to school o be taught the rest.

Fashion Merchandiser
Alternate Titles: Merchandiser, Apparel Merchandiser

Job Description: Fashion merchandisers on the apparel production side track and analyze market trends, production costs, and previous sales numbers to determine the product direction that the manufacturers will take each season. If high rise jeans are going to become the next big thing, a fashion merchandiser needs to be one of the first in the industry to spot the trend. Fashion merchandising professionals on the retail side are responsible for tracking consumer trends and the latest styles to determine store inventory and to price clothes. In addition to arranging the receiving and storage of apparel, retail merchandisers supervise the creation of visual displays and the overall appearance of the store. They may also be responsible for tracking profits and losses. Merchandisers are some of the most powerful employees within an apparel company, and they have large bottom-line and personnel management responsibilities.

Salary Range: $50,000 to $100,000+
Experienced salary may range from $50,000 to over $80,000
Top level salary can easily go over $100,000+

Outlook: Every apparel maker needs at least one fashion merchandiser. As a result, there are a number of merchandiser positions open, but the qualifications required to excel in this position cast a narrow net among prospective applicants. Those who have the business acumen and good fashion judgment to achieve and maintain profitability in their sector could advance high up the executive ladder.

Qualifications:
Education – Many technical and trade schools offer 2-year associate's degrees in fashion merchandising with courses in consumer research, fashion CAD (computer aided design),fashion history and culture, and business skills. An associate's degree can often lead to an entry-level assistant merchandising position. For a more advanced position, a 4-year bachelor's degree in Fashion Merchandising, Fashion Design, Apparel Production, or Marketing is preferable. An MBA (Masters in Business Administration) is a plus, as is participation in some executive training programs.

Experience – between 5-10 years of apparel industry experience is required along with some retail or sales experience. Fashion merchandisers may start out as retail management trainees and work their way up to fashion buyer or merchandising assistant positions. Merchandising job opportunities exist in fashion salons, fashion consulting firms, department stores, specialty shops and boutiques, fashion magazines, and import/export firms, among others.

Personal Characteristics and Skills – extensive knowledge of the apparel industry and trends; highly analytical with strong math skills; ability to predict and create fashion trends; ability to combine information from market sales and production data with fashion forecasts and translate into smart product-line decisions; decisive; ability to work with other executives;well-organized; detail oriented; calm under pressure.

Career Path: Fashion Buyer > Merchandising Assistant > Merchandiser > Merchandising Director

A lot depends on your own interests. Do you like to work with people, are you better with crunching numbers, are you interested with online work? Contrary to popular belief, you can do more than "just" work in a retail store.
