Love Fashion, Can't Sketch?

I am currently 2 years away from getting my Bachelor in Fashion Merchandising. I'm still in the process of figuring out exactly I would like to end up doing. Right now, I love, and am rather good at, finding random, everyday things that can be great ideas for a fashion piece. For example, a painting at the local museum, or a tree in the park, graffiti on the wall, etc….My problem is, I have all these pictures of great ideas for dresses/outfits, but I can't sketch if my life depended on it. I have all these great ideas in my mind but I can't get it onto paper. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a computer program for sketching where you don't physically have to draw??? I'll take any suggestions at all……..

I suggest you either plan to go into another part of the fashion industry that does not involve the design aspect (such as being a buyer for a store, opening your own boutique, working FOR a designer in marketing or putting together completed pieces, etc.) or bite the bullet and do your best to learn to sketch. There are lots more opportunities in the fashion world than just designing your own line (which would require sketching). Talk to your counsellor and see what other jobs they can suggest. Depending on where you live (NY would be best for opportunities) you could find other jobs that meet exactly what you are good at.

Personally, I think it sounds like you'd make a good buyer. You don't have to sketch but just choose what clothes will be carried for each season at a store, like Nordstrom.

What can I do with a degree in fashion merchandising?

I'm considering this as a major but I don't want to have extremely limited career options upon graduation. Also, what are some colleges with good fashion merchandising programs? Thanks!

In the field of fashion and merchandising there are two basic levels of professionals; there are entry-level assistants who learn the ropes and there are professionals well versed in the industry.
Most fashion designers start out as pattern makers or sketching assistants for designers who have made a name for themselves. With more experience some career options include chief designer, design department head, or other fashion manager/coordinator. Though it's a very small percentage, some designers decide to start their own company and design their own product to sell.
Another route to take is to create designs for clothing wholesalers or manufacturers, such as big name companies like The Gap or J.Crew. Designers can also choose to specialize in costume design for the theater, movies, and television productions.
If you want to work with the best of the best in the field of fashion design, plan to spend at least a few years in New York City or California, where two-thirds of all professional fashion designers work. This is a field that allows creativity to flow and can be very rewarding, but it's also very competitive. There are many more people trying to get into the fashion business, than there are open positions.

do i need a bachelors in business to become a retail buyer?

is it better that i get it in business rather than in fashion merchandising??

should i get a bachelors in fashion merchandising and then go for my masters in business? would it be hard going into a master program in business even though i have no background (classes wise) in it?

Do you mean Real Estate Agent? Anyone can *buy* real estate.
If you mean agent, I think you can get by with an A.A. There is a licensure test you take to become a certified agent. You don’t *need* a business degree.

If you by some chance you meant Mergers and Acquisitions then you will need a JD/MBA.

i want to be noticed! what are the top schools in the u.s known for their journalism degree/program?

im going to a community college then transfering and i want to major in journalism and fashion merchandising. in order to be noticed is by going to a top journalism school or fashion school sooo…..im stuck.

You may want to research the top schools in those areas. Princetonreview.com could help you, and Princeton Review and some other companies have books that list the top schools in various areas. You could also probably just do a search in a search engine for "top journalism programs" or something and find more information that way.

I don't know anything about fashion merchandising, but the University of Missouri has one of the best journalism schools in the country.

Study abroad scholarships for fashion majors……?

I'm a recent graduate desperately searching for assistance to study fashion in Italy. I've been accepted into a master's program in Italy to study fashion merchandising. But the school does not have a FAFSA code meaning I can receive no help from the government on this one. I have looked EVERYWHERE for assistance but Im finding nothing that pertains to fashion or pertains to me. Can anyone help!!??
I have tried fastweb and many other scholarships sites….is there anyone who has actually been successful with these sites?

just visit scholarship websites, i.e. fastweb.com
you should be able to find something to fit your needs, but if not you can always depend on a loan. even though you will have to pay it back,(most likely after you graduate), it is worth education.

I have never been quite ready for college. I’ve always put in on the back burner and never really thought about it. I never wanted to leave my hometown, my friends, or the comfort of my sheltered life. Everything was so perfect and normal. Then one day, something hit me like a giant bus. On March 26, 2008, my best friend got into a terrible car accident, and it completely changed my life, forever. It really was the hardest time of my life. Because of this, I feel like I want to go to college to create a new life, pursue a major that I’ll thrive and love, and have experience the real world.
First, I want to go to college to create a new life for myself. Losing anyone close to you is very hard. It makes you want to just escape from all the drama. I want to have as much fun as I did with her. College is a place to truly find your strengths and weaknesses. I want to meet new people, and make new friends who I will cherish for the rest of my life. I was really only close with one friend, and now that she is gone, I want to get closer with more people. I believe that Indiana University of Pennsylvania will really help me do that.
Second, I want to pursue a major that I’ll thrive and love, which IUP can also help me with. Ever since I was little, I have been cutting and sewing clothes for my two little sisters, my mom, and my dog, Brownie. IUP’s fashion merchandising major sound like something that I will really enjoy, and excel at. I am a girl with big dreams. I don’t want to live in a small town for the rest of my life, and having a career in fashion from IUP fashion merchandising program would make me ready for the leap to the real world.
Third, I want to experience the real world. I rely on my mother, grandma, and even my best friend way to much. When I lost her, I felt so left out, like a lost little kid in the middle of the mall just looking for her parents. I realize that I can not rely on people my entire life. I want to be independent, and lead my own life. Ever since the accident, I just want to leave my hometown and find out what more there is to life. Indiana, Pennsylvania sounds like the perfect city to live it. It is not too big, nor too small. I can not image anywhere else but IUP. There are so many activities to keep my busy, while I learn what the real world is going to be like. I really think that it can prepare me for that.
Overall, Indiana University of Pennsylvania sounds perfect for me. I need to lead a new life, make changes, and to pretty much just grow. I think that I am now truly ready for what college life has to offer me. Losing my best friend has taught me something truly important that I always need remind myself, never take life for granted. I want to make my life all it can possibly be, and that is why I think IUP is where I want to be spending the next four years of my life.

Yeah, I agree with you. I know what you're talking about. Last year in September 2007, one of my mom's best friends, Janis, died of pancreatic cancer at the young age of 54 I think. Although she wasn't my friend, she was like a second mom or an aunt to me. She knew me my whole life, ever since I was born, and she was actually a rather healthy person, but her innocent life was taken by such a deadly form of cancer. I was in 9th grade at the time, and I was devastated when she died. I began to fall behind in school due to large amounts of stress, and I procrastinated constantly on homework. It just got worse and worse. I even started to see a counselor because I became mildly depressed. My parents and I got into arguments daily over simple things. Now I've changed, however. I eventually got over her death, and my grades improved slightly. I think that going to a new college to meet new people is a fantastic idea. I know that my best friends help cheer me up Good luck.

My daughter is trying to decide which college to go to (has several acceptances). PhilaU has a major she is interested in – Fashion Merchandising, which is in the college of business. In addition to Phila U, if you know anything about the quality of their Fashion Merch program please let me know. Thanks!

i found the school excellent! I didn't attend but i had a job as the school mascot (a giant guinea pig)! The guinea pig suit was rather humid but the university offered a good recommendation letter when i tried out to be the mascot for the eagles. i didn't get the job but I'm currently employed as a giant quill feather mascot for some private school…Inkelandunce? hmmm…Independence! that was it yes…

What do you think of Philadelphia University?

I'm going next fall for Fashion Merchandising, (so excited!) I've heard they have a really great fashion program. I've gone to visit once but it was just so overwhelming i can't even remember a lot of it that well. I just wanted to hear some opinions about the school?

The campus is pretty small and in a safe part of the city. There are a large number of on-campus activities and they expect you to be involved in some form of community service.

The cafeterias are eat-all-you-can so you have to be careful with your weight.

There are some strange people running around there, some might call it a freak show. People go to extremes trying to be "different".

Don't expect a lot of attention from faculty outside of class time unless you hunt them down yourself. They don't go out of their way to support you when things get tough.

Many students do well there, but they accept a lot of "reach" candidates to pay the bills for the scholarship students.

what major should i choose if i want to be a fashion writer?

i want to be a fashion writer or journalist (whatever) but i can't decide on what major to chose from i could take english or fashion merchandising- and if i take up f.m, i can go to eastern shore and they have a program with F.I.T and u get to go to NY for your Jr. year, and i really want to go to NY, but if i don't get into UMES, there is no community college with fashion merchandasing…PLZ help… whoever has the best answers gets 10 points

You can major in English and minor in fashion merchandising. You will get both worlds!

With a BS in Marketing what Masters would I apply to if i wanted to do Fashion Retail?

I am currently graduating with a BS in Marketing and would like to attend grad school for my masters. I want to go into a field that has to do with Fashion Merchandising or Retail Marketing but can not figure out what master's program I should apply for.

I recommend you try getting into the industry right now. With a masters, you would become over-qualified for an entry level job, and without being in the industry, it is unlikely that you can start with a mid-career position in the industry with a masters degree.

So start now, and get an internship in the industry. This will not be easy, and it would be hard, dirty work. Hopefully somebody will notice you and give you a break. If you can do well, you'll move up the ladder. If you ever feel that you're in a situation where a masters degree will give you a promotion or education required for a certain job, then only go for it.
