can anyone tell me what is required to be a merchandise marketer or anything to do with a fashion career? its for my class but i cant find crap on the net. i need like education requirements, the salary…etc. thanx.

The Fashion Designer profession, has recently emerged as one of the most sort out careers among the youths . The major functional areas in the industry are designing garments, cutting the cloth, sewing the pieces together and finally merchandising. Popularising and marketing of the various styles and products is done through ramp shows and fashion write-ups.

Fashion is a term commonly used in relation to clothes, dresses, garments, textiles, etc. There is an increase in quality textiles and materials for the fashion designers to work with. Fashion is identified today with status, acceptance and it almost implies social involvement. India enjoys a prominent place in the international market with its rich silks, traditional handloom fabrics, rustic textures and vibrant dyes. The creation of a worldmarket for Indian garments is largely the contribution of Indian fashion designers. The trend for growth are set for upcoming fashion entrepreneurs.

What should I do with my life?

I have an art degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2002). The concentration is in costume design and construction. I have worked as a visual manager and retail manager (Banana Republic) and Store Manager (Charlotte Russe) for 4 years. In both of these cases I won several awards for management, merchandising, and sales goals. I love fashion, business, people motivation, and merchandising. I did not like the 50-60 hr work weeks (with no extra money I was salary, I don't mind working hard), constantly dealing with shoplifters, ridiculous hours (no one, even at Christmas time, shops at 8 on a Sun. morning in the South) and constant turnover (holiday help etc…) that you had to retrain. I have many interests such as computers, books, art, hiking, volunteer work, debate, socializing. Because of my varying interests I can't figure out what I want to do with my life. Feel free to contact me for more info. So what do you suggest that would be a good match?

Design a new line of outdoor gear for camping ang hiking and such, start your own line. I'm so tired of Cabellas and L.L. Bean, it's all the same boring stuff, I'm an outdoors girl, we need something sexy yet functional to wear on our outdoor events.

how to decide what to do with the rest of your life…?

I have absolutely –no– idea what I want to do with my life. There are several different things that interest me, architecture, diagnostic medical sonography, radiology technology, fashion merchandising, wedding planning… the list continues! I need help! Are there any books that you would suggest for help with majors, and careers? I already have the collegeboard book of majors. Do you know what careers have the best outlook with the best salary?

Thank you in advance!

(Please note, I am going into my second year towards a degree in Agricultural Business)

Have you talked to your guidance counselor? They have aptitude tests that you can take that will show you what careers you are most suited for based on your choice of answers. This would be a good starting point.

It isn't necessary any more to choose a career and stick with it the rest of your life. Many people change careers several times in their lifetimes.

Any opinions/advice on FIDM (Fashion Insitute of Design & Merchandising) in Los Angeles?

I’m thinking of going to FIDM for the A.A. Jewelry Design program. I’m currently working full time as a Financial Analyst with a B.S. in Business Administration from UC Riverside.

I really hate my job and I’m not enjoying myself in this field. I’ve always been interested in jewelry, but I’m not sure if its worth giving up my job right now to pursue it at FIDM.

Should I stick with my job a bit longer? Should I go ahead and try out the Jewelry program at FIDM? Is FIDM any good at all? If you don’t like FIDM, please suggest another school (anywhere in the world, but preferably in the US) that has a good jewelry/gemology program.

Some details on my current job:
- Been at this company for 3 years
- Salary is $47,000
- No room for growth
- Financial analyst and accounting assistant = boring
- Politics within the company

I think all of us have been there at one point or another! I would first of all suggest making an appointment to talk to an advisor at FIDM about the Jewelry program which is awesome from what my friend told me. She is in the program right now and she is loving it! If you feel stuck in a rut, going the creative route is only going to work if you have the will to pursue a career in that or at least the passion for what you are interested in. I can tell that your deep interest is there and ultimately if you are unhappy, following that passion would probably make you happier…but then again, if you have the ability to leave a job to pursue that dream, with the resources you currently have at your disposal, why not at least look into the idea?

Talk your situation over with an advisor at FIDM FIRST and if the money issue becomes important there might also be ways that the school can help you! Where there’s a will, there’s a way right? Good luck with everything and go on their website www.fidm.com and make an appointment!

i want to apply on fashion designing jobs in Hong Kong, maybe, for the assistant designer position, but don't know what to write on "expected salary". i'm not from Hong Kong, so i don't know how much i should write.
I'm a college graduate of Fashion Designing and Merchandising in the Philippines but have little experience in this line of work.

With your lack of experience,please forgive me for I do not mean to hurt you,there would be little room to expect much,hence just settle in for the minimum amount and when you have gained enough in this field,then ask for what you merit.

What kind of jon can I get with a bachleors in fashion merchandising? How is the salary? Are the jobs enjoyable?

I just answered a question similar to this one, You can find a plenty of sources on line however, if you have considered on line business or catalogers that sells clothes and lingerie you might be a step close to reach your goal in success, I had a job once as an intern with the top selling catalogs company in Germany (Otto). It was a great experience to me as I was responsible for that area sales and marketing.I have learned so many important things including selling and buying techniques and how it is important for a person to understand the consumer requirements.
There are two key needs here:

The first is to build up a detailed profile of your client -their personality, what they do and don't like, the social circle in which they mix and the sort of clothes in which they feel comfortable.

The other is a detailed knowledge of fashion. Buy all the magazines and keep in touch with what is in and what is out for each season.

By combining these two and appearing knowledgeable, then offer some free consultations to friends and family. Ask them to recommend you and by word of mouth you should start to get some paid business.

Where you live makes a difference ranges from $25 g a year to$35 g. That’s if your good.. at the beginning, perks are having a job.Merchandising is not all that glamorous at the beginning.Not everyone gets to work at bloomingdales.Not to discourage you, But you start out like everyone else, entry level.There’s a reason why am a landscape designer right now.
