Fashion institute of technology or Johnson and wales? please help!?

I know that the fashion institute is probably the better of the two schools for fashion merchandising and it's my dream school, but I live in rhode island so it would be easier for me to go to johnson and wales, whereas moving to NYC would be something i'd have to adjust to. I know J&W is highly respected when it comes to culinary, but I don't know about the business and fashion side. Basically if I end up going to johnson and wales will i be able to find and get the same jobs in fashion buying as if i had gone to FIT, or does J&W have zero credibility when it comes to the fashion world?

I would go with FIT. If you type the school name into wikipedia, you will see the long list of industry professionals who attended the school. Also, every Professor you have there worked in the industry. The school is world renowned, and you will get a better education. This is a life career you are considering options for. In 20 years you will be kicking yourself for not attending FIT.

Dental Hygiene or Fashion Merchandising?

which one would you prefer? which one do you think makes more money, and has a better job outlook?

I am a Dental Hygienist and I make good money but it is true that there's a cap and that's it. I've also noticed that those who do this mainly for the money get burned out real fast and end up hating their jobs. Then what are you trained for? Nothing else!
It is rewarding for me because you help people not only with Dental health but with their over all health since DR's have related gum disease to heart attacks and strokes.
One good thing also is you can work part time, have a family and make good money. Bad thing also is little to no benefits.
Fashion Merchandising does sound much more exciting!

What's the best way to go about becoming a Fashion Buyer?

I mean I've done alot of research and will soon be attending the academy of design and technology majoring in fashion merchandising and i recently got hired at my frist real retail job Dillard's as a Sales Associate. What more does it take?

Job Description: Fashion buyers use their sense of style, knowledge of fashion trends, and understanding of their target customers' desires to create an attractive selection of apparel for retail stores. Buyers often make their purchases up to 1 or 2 years in advance due to the length of time it takes for a designer or manufacturer to fill all orders, so it is important for them to be able to understand past, present, and future fashion trends. Buyers must also be good at budgeting and planning inventory so that a good selection of clothing is always available for customers.

Fashion buyers typically work for department stores, wholesale clothing distributors, or smaller retail establishments. They are responsible for selecting and purchasing apparel and accessories from designers, manufacturers, or wholesalers for retail sale. Apparel buyers for larger department stores usually specialize in a specific line of clothes or accessories (e.g., men's suits or women's denim).

Salary Range: Earnings potential to $100K

Qualifications:
Education – A college degree in Fashion Merchandising or a related field is required. Coursework in Business and Fashion Design is very helpful to enter the fashion buying career.

Experience – Retail sales experience is very helpful, as understanding the buying behavior of customers is key to being a successful apparel buyer.

Personal Characteristics/Skills – Fashion-lover with knowledge of fashion history and trends; good analytical skills; excellent budgeting and planning skills; inventory management skills; good negotiation abilities; flexible work attitude; ability to deal well with deadlines and stress.

hello i am really into fashion and would like to pursue a career in it,but i really dont know what kind of job to pursue because there are so many!! i dont want to be an editor in chief of a fashion magazine (although i wouldn't mind being an assistant) and i don't want to go into designing nor merchandising i want to find a job in fashion that i can express my creativity and be behind the scenes. i really do want to work for a fashion magazine like vogue but i don't what kind of job i should do

try an internship first for an introductory to the fashion industry, and they are more available. like all jobs you have to start at the beginning and work your way up. good luck!

If I were to have bachelors degree in fasion merchandising, what kind of job could I get after graduating?

I am thinking about majoring in fashion merchandising. anyone know what i should expect? what type of job i would have? pay? would it be stressful? benefits?

Your job would have to be based out of a city like LA or San Fran, because that is where the fashion biz florishes. Big cities are stressful because of traffic, crowds and what not. You will have to persistantly secure new clients which can also become stressful. All i can really say is that if you enjoy the fashion field, then give it a shot, do your best and God bless. A friend of mine received a degree from FIDM and started with a $40,000 job straight out of school. Not amazing, but good.

Hit the modeling agencies in South Beach, Miami, if you just want a general idea. You can e-mail them or call them from NYC. I can tell you offhand there are dozens of different types of fashion shows and events throughout the year, in South Florida.

how hard is it to get an job in FASHION MERCHANDISING?

If you want to be a manager at a retail store for the rest of your life (and work weekends and fill in for young irresponsible co workers who work only for the discounts) then this is a correct career path, otherwise find a new interest. I was in fasion merchandising for a bit and its not all its cracked up to be. You can climb that ladder just working in retail without the degree. think about the exact career you would want to have and find someone with it, then contact them and see what they advise for you!

I believe that Women's Wear Daily, which is an industry paper, has job listings at the back. And a lot of jobs are found via word-of-mouth, people being recommended for jobs via networking. Lastly, the big houses and retailers also recruit out of specific colleges. For example, a lot of houses recruit out of the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, while a lot of retaillers recruiter buyers from schools local to their headquarters.
