What is Fashion Merchandising All About?
Every great boutique or department store needs a Wizard of Oz—someone behind the curtain making everything appear as impressive as possible—someone deciding to stock ruby slippers because they're the next big thing. Fashion merchandising experts accomplish tasks like these on a regular basis.

Fashion merchandising requires a blend of fashion sense and business expertise. Style alone won't yield a successful career in this field. Staying ahead of the fashion curve is a feat involving both art and science. Strategy and marketing know-how are an integral part of fashion merchandising.

Fashion Merchandising Tasks
As a fashion merchandiser, your job is to connect fashion with consumers. To reach that goal, you may do a variety of tasks, including the following:

- Attending fashion shows
- Buying fashions
- Negotiating with suppliers and manufacturers
- Managing retail outlets
- Setting up store displays
- Advertising and marketing

Skills Needed
Forecasting Ability – While more methodical than fortune telling, fashion merchandising does require forecasting ability. A thorough knowledge of past fashion trends and an awareness of current industry developments will serve you well in a fashion merchandising career.

Analytical Ability – Problem solving and analytical ability also come in handy in this field. A good sense of style obviously helps you; however, you must also determine how things fit into a budget and whether they meet the functional needs of consumers. Other criteria may also influence your fashion merchandising decisions, so you will need to be able to analyze a complex set of issues and stand behind your choices.

Communication Skills – Fashion merchandising also requires good communication skills. From negotiating with manufacturers to getting your marketing message out to customers, there is ample opportunity to exercise your powers of communication in the fashion merchandising field.

IM thinking of siwthching my major from a clothing and textiles to fashion merchandiser or a business. need advice

My cousin is a buyer for a chain of mall stores (like Forever 21 or one of those), and she received her degree from a public university in Oklahoma. Girl is rockin’ it in NYC now. She’s been doing this for several years. She works in NYC but travels to Spain, Italy and California all the time. Has a wardrobe to die for as well.

which would be a better fashion major fashion merchandising or fashion marketing?

i love to buy the hottest clothes and i would love to help out on the runway. fashion is my life.

They're pretty much the same major. Merchandising is about placing and introducing the product to the customer in a way that will attract them to buying it. Marketing is about finding ways to let the customer know your product exists and what it has to offer.

If you look at two schools – one with a fashion merchandising major and one with a fashion marketing major, they will probably both have virtually the same curriculum. What schools are you looking at? I would suggest New York or Los Angeles for school. You will be right amid the fashion industry in those cities and you'll have more job opportunities. In any other city that major ends up being kind of an….. artificial major/degree.

The only options (in cities other than NYC and LA) tend to be retail stores, which means working as a sales associate making minimum wage. Because in retail stores all they care about is how much experience you have…not your education. So unless you have like 3-5 years of experience even a management position in retail is virtually impossible (unless you're friends with the boss).

If you want to go into a career in Buying you need to be in NYC or LA because the buying is usually done in the corporate offices, which is usually in NYC or LA.

What are some colleges that offer fashion merchandising and journalism?

Would these be the majors I would want ot focus on to be a fashion journalist? What colleges have these?

Try FIDM now I know that San Francisco State University has a great Journalisim program but I do not know for sure if you can focus on Fashion! Check it out though! Also San Francisco Academy of Art! Check them all out!

I know there is one in Miami, though I can't think of the name. Miami is a beautiful city. You should look into it.

What is important for me to know about Fashion Merchandising, especially promotion?

As an assignment I am trying to write a promotional plan for an apparal retail store. Any advice I can be given about fashion trends or marketing would be appriciated. Also any advice on budgeting.

First, if the apparel retail venue has not been defined for you in the assignment, do so. For example, I might choose to develop a plan for the "Pal Gal", which specializes in mid-priced teen and young women's casual fashions. This store is also the exclusive midwest outlet for Oofla-Goofla (OG), a French brand of swimwear and beach accessories.

Your target market: women 16-30

Your Promo package:
- Advertising (local newspapers and mags)
- A Public Relations package targetting target audience magazines (to promote the exclusive stuff)
- In-store promotions and customer incentives
- Special Events (eg, an invitation-only "French Riviera Night" on the shore of lake …..)
- In-store display components and styling advisor
- Direct mailings with special offers to target consumers

Your budget: A reasonable ASP (Advertising, Sales Promotion) budget is 30%-40% of net sales (net sales = projected gross sales less cost of goods). If you decide to use advertising, you'll have to devote the biggest chunk of your budget to it.

Create a six-month, at-a-glance promotional calendar that shows monthly promotional activities. You'll want a couple of things going every month (eg, August: Magazine editorial coverage on the OG line, plus "back to school" in-store promotion).

Having gone off on a tangent, I will now try and answer your question: While the tactics (read: tools) of marketing any kind of retail product will differ, the strategies (read: directions) are universal across nearly all consumer goods. The details will, of course, need to be tweaked and individualized. The objective of any promotional package is creating maximum awareness of your product in the target market.

I really love shopping and want to do something with picking out clothes. And was wondering if thats what fashion merchandising is.

Fashion Merchandising is a fun carreer. I used to do it. Get a job at a clothing store and start there…Macy's or Nordsrom are great starts or work for a smaller store like Gap…and work your way up to a bigger store. It is the art of displaying the clothing for marketing purposes…You might want to look into being a buyer or personal shopper.
